Kitten care & Understanding your new kitten

Did you know?

Sphynx Cats and Kittens require more food than a cat with fur. They are constantly losing body heat, so will eat more often to keep themselves warm. Our kittens are fed wet food 3x a day (2x a day once they reach a year old) and have access to dry food all day long as well as fresh, clean water. Kittens should be on kitten food up until a year old and then switch to adult food and it's recommended to feed your kitten a food with high protein.

Understanding your kittens Mood

  • Purring: your kitten is showing contentment
  • Kneading: your kitten is expressing intense pleasure
  • Rubbing against you: Your kitten is sharing her scent and claiming their territory.
  • Hiding: Your kitten may be feeling stressed or scared, it's good to provide your kitten with a safe space where they will not be bothered and can retreat when feeling anxious
  • Hissing or Growling: your kitten may be trying to intimidate something/someone or showing they are not liking the environment they are in.
  • Tail Waiving: your kitten maybe expressing irritation.

Sphynx tend to get a little dirtier than their furred companion. Sphynxes also don't have fur to absorb the oil they produce. This can often lead to oil spots on soft furnishings in the home such as sheets and blankets. Over bathing can cause them to produce more oil. It's recommended to not over-bath your kitten. Bathe one every 3 months and use hypo-allergenic/non-scented pet wipes in between. They often don't have eye lashes, so can tend to get a lot of dirt in their eyes, be careful not to scratch your kittens' eyes or add additional germs that may be on your hands, this can cause eye infections. In our Elf Sphynxs, their ears are a trap for all kinds of dirt and debree, it's recommended to use a vet-approved ear cleaner and never use cotton swabs as you may cause damage to their ear drums.
